DIETETIC TECHNICIANS SUB-UNIT
WELCOME to the Dietetic Technicians Sub-unit
During 2017-18, Academy and Dietetic Technicians in Practice DPG (DTP) leaders conducted an assessment of DTP’s programming, membership satisfaction and long-term direction to determine how the needs of the DTP community can be most successfully met within the Academy. DTRs and NDTRs continue to express an interest in educational resources and networking, though changes to the DTP DPG structure are required to sustain this community.
Beginning June 1, 2018, the DTP community joined forces as the Sub-unit Dietetic Technicians. The Dietetic Technicians Sub-unit continues to advocate for DTRs/NDTRs, provide education about scope of practice and opportunities to network while also contributing to the overall goals of DHCC.
This resources provided to DTRs and NDTRs. Programming for Dietetic Technician sub-unit members include:
- The opportunity to connect with other DTR/NDTRs as a sub-unit on niche topics.
- Content including past DTP newsletters within the DHCC website to help foster a collaborative community and resource sharing.
- A connected, collaborative community with year-round communication, specific NDTR/DTR content within the DHCC newsletter, and a member EML. To join the subgroup and/or this specific EML link here.
- Access to leadership, education and professional development through CPEU webinar trainings and co-developed educational opportunities with DHCC.
- A voice that advocates for dietetic technician professionals within DHCC and the Academy.
- Opportunities to Educate RD/RDNs within DHCC on how best to work with DTR/NDTRs.
- A dedicated sub-unit leader within the DHCC Executive Committee.
It is important to the Academy to support DTRs and NDTRs and the Academy will continue to have NDTR representation within the HOD.

Often, I see job descriptions that I am quite sure require a dietetic technician, registered (DTR) degree and credential, only to find out that certified dietary manager (CDM) is the minimum requirement for employment. I realized that many people may not know the difference between a DTR and a CDM. I happen to have both certifications and find the distinction to be quite simple to explain. I was able to take my CDM exam after one year of community college. I decided to continue for another year to gain my DTR. The jobs that I have applied for as a DTR include more clinical work versus the food service positions that my fellow CDMs take on. Both are important, but I think it’s imperative for people to understand the difference in edu- cation and training that a DTR receives vs. a CDM.
